SHOSHONE ADVENTURES

Free-Range Hunting in South Africa Still Exists

by Peyton Merideth
CEO, Shoshone Adventure Consulting

Contrary to popular belief, world-class hunting in South Africa is possible without high game fencing. Over 20 years ago, I booked my first safari and, coming from Alaska, was concerned about fences. Over time, I learned how fencing is used for conservation and private wildlife ownership—but for hunters seeking authentic, free-range experiences, the Eastern Cape offers exceptional opportunities.

Discovering Low-Fence Opportunities

I recently hunted with several Shoshone clients on a low-fence sheep ranch north of Grahamstown, just two hours from Port Elizabeth. This region is steeped in history, with colonial roots and relics from frontier wars scattered across the land. It’s not uncommon to stumble upon artifacts while tracking game—a musket ball here, a historical marker there—making the hunt as much about culture as adventure.

Abundant Eastern Cape Game

The Eastern Cape hosts a variety of free-range species, including Springbok, Black Wildebeest, Eastern Cape Kudu, Cape Bushbuck, and more. Unlike regions where some species struggle with local diseases, the Eastern Cape is ideal for authentic hunting experiences. Night hunting for Bush Pigs adds a thrilling dimension, especially with the use of remote-controlled bait lights and motion sensors to locate these elusive animals.

A Thrilling Bush Pig Hunt

During a hunt near Port Alfred, we approached a bait site under dim moonlight. Pigs were already feeding, and we carefully navigated the steep embankment. At 75 yards, I picked out the largest pig’s front shoulder and squeezed the trigger. Even with a suppressor, the shot echoed across the valley. Capturing this adventure on video with David McElwain, Shoshone’s Creative Director, made it even more memorable. It’s moments like this that define the thrill of Eastern Cape hunting.

“Watching the awe on first-time visitors’ faces as they experience free-range Africa is incredibly rewarding.”

Client Success Stories

Over the course of the hunt, Shoshone clients harvested nearly 40 free-range animals, including Eastern Cape Kudu, Springbok, Zebra, Mountain Reedbuck, and more. Only three fallow deer were taken from a separate high-fence operation. These results highlight the Eastern Cape’s diversity and the authentic thrill of stalking animals across open veld and coastal forests.

Why Choose Free-Range Hunting

Free-range hunting in South Africa allows hunters to experience animals behaving naturally, in diverse and scenic environments. The Eastern Cape offers both excitement and variety, from tracking elusive bush pigs in thick forests to observing herds of Springbok on open plains. For hunters who value adventure, authenticity, and conservation, this region provides unparalleled opportunities.
