The Bitterroot and Sapphire Mountains of southwest Montana have long been some of the best predator country in the West. With over 1.2 million acres of prime habitat to work with, hunters aren’t competing for ground or settling for marginal animals.
Spring Black Bear Hunts — Multiple Methods, Exceptional Color Phases
Bear season runs roughly April 15 through June 15, and hunters can choose their method. Spot-and-stalk pursuits put clients behind glass on clear cuts, south-facing slopes, and logging roads where bears are actively feeding after a long winter. Those who want a more traditional experience can run hounds and follow seasoned dogs as they trail and bay their quarry through the timber. The country kicks out a remarkable variety of color phases: cinnamon, chocolate, blonde, red, and more. The emphasis here is firmly on mature bears, not numbers.
Winter Mountain Lion Hunts Hound Hunts
Lion season runs December through March, and these hunts are as Western as it gets. Experienced hounds do the hard work through steep, snow-covered mountain terrain until the cat trees, then hunters hike in with their guide to make the call. A recent shift to a trophy quota system eliminated the draw requirement, which has kept lion numbers strong and genetics solid. To keep quality high, lion hunters are capped at just 6–8 per season — a deliberate choice that makes a real difference in the field.
