Giant Coastal Black Bear Hunting on Vancouver Island
Renowned for producing some of the largest black bears in North America, the coastal rainforests of Vancouver Island offer an exceptional hunting experience for discerning big game hunters. Thanks to abundant food sources such as salmon, these bears thrive in a rich ecosystem that allows them to grow to impressive sizes—often reaching 7 feet and exceeding 400 pounds. As a result, hunters are presented with outstanding opportunities to pursue mature, high-quality animals in a truly wild setting.
Spring Hunts in Prime Bear Habitat
During the spring season (April through mid-June), hunts take place in areas rich with natural food sources, including old logging roads, clear cuts, estuaries, and coastal shorelines. Hunters typically glass from 4×4 vehicles and then move in on foot for a strategic stalk. Because of the density of the bear population, it is common to see 7 to 20 bears per day, allowing hunters to be selective when targeting mature boars.
Fall Hunts During the Salmon Run
In contrast, the fall season (September through October) coincides with the annual salmon run, when bears are highly active and feeding heavily in preparation for winter. This time of year provides a unique and visually stunning experience, as hunters witness bears, eagles, and other wildlife congregating along rivers and estuaries. Consequently, this season offers both exceptional hunting and unforgettable wildlife encounters.
Limited, High-Quality Hunting Experience
To maintain quality and sustainability, only a limited number of hunts are offered each year. Hunts are conducted on a 5-day, all-inclusive basis, with both 1×1 and 2×1 guide options available. This approach ensures personalized attention, low hunting pressure, and a greater opportunity to harvest a mature bear.
