Color Phase Black Bear Hunting – Grand Slam Explained

by Peyton Merideth
CEO, Shoshone Adventure Consulting

Are you ready to take your hunting skills to the next level? The Black Bear Gram Slam challenges hunters to harvest a bear from every color phase—black, chocolate, cinnamon, and blond. Each bear is uniquely adapted to its environment, offering a once-in-a-lifetime experience for those lucky enough to encounter them. It’s a difficult feat, but the reward is unparalleled—and at Shoshone Adventures, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

Understanding Black Bear Color Phases

Black bears aren’t always black. Their fur can range from jet black to cinnamon, blond, chocolate, and even blue-gray or white in rare cases. These large omnivores roam forests and mountains across North America, growing up to six feet long and weighing over 600 pounds. In spring, they migrate to higher elevations in search of food.

Knowing the different color phases is essential for hunters, as each phase presents unique challenges:

  • Black: Found primarily in eastern forests, their dark fur provides camouflage and abrasion resistance.
  • Cinnamon: Originally western U.S., now also in Canada, Alaska, and Mexico; reddish-brown fur helps with heat regulation in open terrain.
  • Blond: Rare genetic variation, lighter fur stands out in the wild; known for their gentle, playful nature.
  • Chocolate: Large bears with dark brown to golden coats, heavier than other phases, with short legs and small ears.

Special Subspecies:

  • Kermode Bear (Spirit Bear): Creamy white bears in coastal BC, a rare genetic variation of black bears.
  • Glacier Bear: Dark blue-gray bears in southeastern Alaska, relics of Ice Age isolation.

Where to Find These Bears

Black bear color phases are found throughout North America:

  • Canada: Alberta, Saskatchewan, BC, Manitoba, Yukon, Ontario, Newfoundland & Labrador
  • U.S.: Alaska, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington, Wyoming, and more

Percentages of color phases vary by region—chocolate, cinnamon, and blond are more common in western states, while black dominates eastern forests. Rare white and blue-gray bears appear in specific isolated populations.

The Gram Slam is a challenge for hunters seeking distinction: harvest a black, chocolate, cinnamon, and blond bear. It’s a test of skill, patience, and perseverance. Few hunters attempt it, but with Shoshone Adventures’ guidance, you can experience this ultimate hunting achievement.
