The challenges and rewards of filming hunting and adventure shows
by Peyton Merideth
The Power of Professional-Quality Equipment
High-definition cameras, capable of slow-motion shooting, help transform simple hunting moments into cinematic storytelling. For example, a crisp arrow release or foggy breath hanging in the cold morning air pulls audiences straight into the hunt. Additionally, external microphones ensure viewers catch whispered strategies and authentic reactions. Clear audio is non-negotiable, which is why everyone in our videos is mic’d.
Furthermore, drones add sweeping landscape perspectives and dynamic B-roll. When used safely and legally, they instantly increase production value. Pro Tip: Viewers forgive imperfect video far more easily than bad audio, so always protect sound quality first.
Story First: Filming With Purpose
Every successful video begins with a clear storyline before boots ever hit the ground. Therefore, knowing the who, what, when, where, why, and how makes every shot intentional. On a recent trip, for instance, we set out to explore a meaningful question: Can families truly enjoy a great hunting experience in Africa, or are the logistics too overwhelming?
With the right planning, we captured moments that showed Africa can be a life-changing family adventure. Consequently, the narrative shaped the way we filmed and ultimately transformed the final video into a genuine story rather than just a sequence of shots.
Capturing Unforgettable Firsts
Our Creative Director, David McElwain, recently traveled to South Africa and filmed his first-ever Kudu hunt. The long shot, the emotion, and the awe of the African landscape—capturing it all on camera preserved not just a moment, but a memory. Moreover, David wasn’t just filming his hunt—he was filming his experience. That authenticity is what connects with viewers.
The Realities of Filming in the Field
Filming yourself is challenging. During my antelope hunt, for example, I struggled with a broken tripod and spooked animals every time I reached for the camera. This taught me lessons in preparation—and humility. On another trip, I lined up on a once-in-a-lifetime Bontebok in South Africa. Just before I pulled the trigger, David hit record at the perfect moment. Without that extra set of hands, we would have missed something irreplaceable.
One of Our Golden Rules
Never stop recording once the action starts. Pausing risks losing the most important moments and makes editing far more difficult. Therefore, continuous rolling preserves the energy and authenticity of the story. As we often say, “You can’t recreate real reactions. Rolling through the chaos is where the magic lives.”
Why We Create These Videos
Each project is made for the viewer—the person who may never step foot in Africa or hunt a Kudu or chase a Bontebok. Our job is to bring them along. We film so they can feel part of the moment, even from thousands of miles away. It isn’t easy. In fact, it takes planning, gear, time, and passion. Yet, the result is always worth it: powerful stories and unforgettable memories.
