Most people think of Labor Day Weekend as the traditional end of summer. The mention of the date conjures images of barbecues, college football, and maybe dove shoots. But for serious hunters, Labor Day is the perfect time to start thinking about hunting season and cooler temperatures—and what better way to spend it than chasing whitetail in Alberta?
Alberta: A Whitetail Hunter’s Paradise
While I enjoy pursuing all types of game around the world, archery hunting for whitetail remains my favorite. I primarily hunt on my farm in Kansas, but the one-tag rule can limit opportunities. If I hunt early and succeed, I must wait for the rest of the season without another buck tag. In recent years, I discovered the perfect solution: early season whitetail hunting in Alberta.
The province boasts vast expanses of diverse terrain—from dense forests to sprawling prairies—providing ideal habitat for trophy whitetail deer. These adaptable creatures are found throughout the province, from the foothills of the Rockies to the grasslands of the southeast. Alberta offers hunters a prime destination to pursue whitetail against breathtaking scenery.
Early Season Archery Advantage
I first visited Alberta a couple of years ago with one of Shoshone’s best outfitters. While booking a hunt for a client, I was offered the chance to target some of the “big boys” left from the previous year. I quickly said, “He’s found his man!” That hunt resulted in my largest bow buck to date: an eleven-pointer.
“Alberta offers the greatest opportunity to harvest a trophy whitetail, especially in the early season.”
Guaranteed Tags and Quality Hunting
For hunters who have not yet ventured to Alberta, particularly for early season archery, you’re missing out. Unlike Kansas and many Midwest states, Alberta guarantees tags and manages allocations carefully. This ensures a seamless, high-quality hunting experience with minimal worry about draws or limited permits.
Most U.S. states don’t allow whitetail hunting over Labor Day Weekend, either because the season hasn’t opened or temperatures aren’t favorable. In Alberta, the season starts September 1st, temperatures are cool and pleasant, and bucks are in velvet—ideal for hunting and for mounting a velvet whitetail trophy.
Extend Your Hunting Season
Labor Day hunting in Alberta allows serious whitetail hunters to extend their season, enjoy the beauty of early fall, and return home with tags in hand. Early season conditions make deer highly patternable, increasing your chance to harvest a trophy buck. Combine guaranteed tags, ideal conditions, and the thrill of archery hunting, and it’s an experience every dedicated whitetail hunter should try.
If you’re ready to take your whitetail hunting to the next level, consider a Labor Day Weekend hunt in Alberta. You may very well come home with your largest buck yet—and you won’t be disappointed.
