Native Free-Ranging Woodland Bison
These are native, free-ranging woodland bison in their natural habitat. While not pure woodland bison in Canada due to reintroduction and historical genetic bottlenecking, they qualify for export to the United States and count toward SCI & SCI North America Slams under the woodland bison category.
Trophy Potential
The bull may weigh up to 3,000 lbs and a cow 1,500 lbs. Many bulls in this area are ancient, offering very high trophy potential. Hunters also have the opportunity to pursue the elusive timber wolf, which inhabits the same area as the woodland bison.
Hunting Methods & Terrain
Most hunting is done on snowmobiles and quads, with daily travel of up to 80 km (50 miles) through snow 1–3 feet deep. The hunt is conducted during the heart of winter with temperatures between -20 to -40°F. Firearms must be a minimum of .375 caliber with 300 grain bullets to ensure an effective shot on these robust animals.
Stalking & Shot Opportunity
This hunt takes place 100% in boreal forest, with hunters using snowshoes to stalk bulls once located. Historical shot opportunity rates on trophy bulls are 60–65%, with average shots under 100 yards.
An Adventure of a Lifetime
Ultimately, this is a true adventure hunt, providing an unforgettable experience in the breathtaking wilderness of Northern Alberta.
