t’s no big secret that some of the very best trophy elk hunting in New Mexico (and the world) takes place in the primitive weapons units of Southwest-ern New Mexico. These tags are tough to draw, but the drawing odds get better if you are booked with an outfitter and can draw from the outfitter pool. This outfitter specializes in hunting Units 13, 15,16, 17, and 36. Units 13, 15 and 17 are trophy units and can only be hunted with bow or muzzleloader. Very limited tags in these units make for great hunting for bulls ranging between 280” - 390”. Mostly 4x4 transportation with ranch house accommodations, although a wilderness horse-back/tent camp hunt is also offered deep into the Gila Wilderness. It only takes a $500 deposit to book this hunt, and the outfitter will enter your name in the drawing every year till you are successful, or want to purchase a landowner tag. Landowner tags range from $8,000 to $12,000+ depending on date and unit.
