If you are looking for a premier Mountain Caribou hunt, this is the hunt for you. This outfitter operates in Northwestern British Columbia in the Telegraph Creek – Stikine River area. The guide area is a vast territory encompassing over 8,000 square miles. The guide area is the oldest established in Northern British Columbia and has long been a favorite with sportsman. The area was first hunted in 1884 by F.C. Galbreath, a pioneer outfitter, and was later sold to George Ball who operated it under ‘Northwest Ranching and Outfitting’ for over thirty years. Much of the area remains unchanged, as it has been spared heavy commercial and residential pressure. The hunt area has a diverse game population: stone sheep, grizzly bear, mountain goat, mountain caribou, moose, black bear and wolf. Several species of grouse and ptarmigan also live in the area and the lakes, rivers and streams boast incredible fishing opportunities. This outfitter also has excellent fishing in their many lakes and rivers. If you finish your hunt early, you are welcome to fish as much as you’d like. This outfitter has some rods/reels in camp, but you may wish to bring your own, especially if you are a serious fisherman. Fly, spin and casting methods all work well. The most common fish in their area include Lake Trout, Bull Trout, Rainbow Trout. They also have several rivers and creeks with major Salmon Runs coming in. Chinook, Sockeye and Coho all run into their area. This outfitter asks that you keep just enough fish to eat in camp and release the others. Fishing licenses must be purchased ahead of time. When it comes to the Mountain Caribou hunt in particular, this is a 12-Day Caribou hunt with 10-Days of hunting. For arrival and departure, you will fly into Whitehorse and then take a corresponding charter flight into camp that the outfitter will instruct you on which charter flight service provider to use. This outfitter has a resident Mountain Caribou population and does not rely on pursuing a migrating herd. They hunt on several large plateaus from mid August through October. This outfitter offers both horseback and fly-in backpack hunts for caribou. Ultimately, this is a great all around hunt that can also be combined with mountain goat and other big game species depending on the time of booking and annual availability.
