Cape Town: A Journey Through History

by Peyton Merideth
Exploring Cape Town Before Your Safari

On our way to a hunting trip in the Eastern Cape, my wife Kristi and I spent several unforgettable days exploring the vibrant city of Cape Town, South Africa. As a history enthusiast, I was especially eager to dive into the region’s rich and complex past. Cape Town exceeded every expectation. Indeed, it combines stunning natural beauty, deep historical roots, vibrant culture, and world-class food and wine—all in one accessible package.

A City Built on History

Cape Town is one of Southern Africa’s oldest cities, founded by the Dutch East India Company in 1652. The Dutch settled in the Cape of Good Hope to establish a supply station for ships traveling between Europe and Asia. Jan van Riebeeck led the original expedition, and the settlement eventually expanded into a colony with farms, forts, and trading posts. Consequently, this colonial foundation shaped much of South Africa’s early history—from vineyards to interactions between Dutch settlers, indigenous Khoikhoi people, and later British colonists. Understanding this history adds valuable context to everything you see in the city today.

The Legacy of Nelson Mandela and Robben Island

One of the most moving experiences Kristi and I shared was visiting Robben Island, the infamous prison where Nelson Mandela was held for 18 years. Visiting Robben Island is like stepping back in time. For example, the ferry ride across the bay is somber, and walking the halls of the prison—led by former inmates—brings South Africa’s painful apartheid past to life. Indeed, it was a life-changing experience, and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking a deeper understanding of South Africa’s journey to democracy.

Boulders Beach: Penguins in the Wild

On a lighter note, one of the most fun highlights of our trip was visiting Boulders Beach, home to a large colony of African Penguins. Unlike a zoo, these penguins waddle on the beach and dive through the surf in their natural habitat. This protected area is just outside Simon’s Town and is part of Table Mountain National Park. Boardwalks allow visitors to get close without disturbing the penguins, making it an enjoyable experience for travelers of all ages.

Cape Wine Country: Stellenbosch & Franschhoek

No visit to Cape Town is complete without spending time in the nearby Cape Winelands. Kristi and I toured Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, charming towns nestled among rolling hills, vineyards, and dramatic mountains. The wine here is not just good—it’s world-class. Guided tours made the experience seamless and educational, allowing us to visit multiple wineries, learn about the wine-making process, and enjoy a few samples along the way. Furthermore, Shoshone Adventure Consulting partners with trusted local guides to offer all-inclusive tours, adding insight and depth you wouldn’t get on your own.

Natural Wonders: Table Mountain, Lion’s Head & Signal Hill

Cape Town is famous for its iconic landscape, particularly Table Mountain. Weather permitting, a cable car ride offers panoramic views of the city, ocean, and surrounding peaks. Kristi and I were lucky to catch a clear day—it was breathtaking. Adjacent to Table Mountain, Lion’s Head and Signal Hill are popular hiking and viewing spots. Signal Hill has a fascinating history; it was used to signal the arrival of ships with flags by day and cannons by night. Today, the Noon Gun still fires daily, a tradition dating back to 1806.

The Cape of Good Hope: Where Oceans Collide

We also drove down to the Cape of Good Hope, the southwestern tip of Africa where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. The coastline is rugged, with crashing waves and wind-blown cliffs. Standing at the edge of the continent, looking out over the ocean, gives a humbling sense of the vastness of the world. It’s a dramatic and unforgettable addition to any Cape Town itinerary.

Medical Milestones: The Christiaan Barnard Museum

As a history enthusiast, I found the Christiaan Barnard Museum at Groote Schuur Hospital fascinating. Dr. Barnard performed the world’s first successful human heart transplant in 1967. The museum showcases the groundbreaking operation, the global reaction, and Barnard’s lasting legacy. Seeing the surgical theater and original equipment in person was an incredible experience.

Cape Town: Easy to Reach, Hard to Forget

One of the best things about Cape Town is its accessibility. Major international airlines fly direct from Europe, the Middle East, and other African hubs. Thus, it’s a convenient stopover or addition to a South African hunting safari. Cape Town offers something for everyone: history, wildlife, cuisine, shopping, culture, and adventure. With its friendly people and breathtaking scenery, it’s no wonder more Shoshone clients are adding a few days here before or after their hunts.
