Take Your Family on Safari: An Unforgettable African Adventure

Take Your Family on Safari: An Unforgettable African Adventure

For over 20 years, I have been fortunate to experience the thrill of hunting in Southern Africa. However, I had always dreamt of sharing this adventure with my children. My wife, who loves seeing the animals and immersing herself in the local culture, has accompanied me on countless trips across South Africa. From the top of Table Mountain to the historic significance of Robben Island, from the scenic beauty of the Garden Route to the charm of its small towns, every journey has been a memorable one. Whether it was indulging in a little too much wine in the Cape Winelands or getting up close to elephants and drenched by the mist of Victoria Falls, Africa has never ceased to amaze us.

In June 2024, I had the opportunity to finally bring my family on safari, thanks to my good friends Pieter and Lizelle Lamprecht at Cruiser Safaris. My first safari with Pieter was over 20 years ago, and it has been incredible to see how Cruiser Safaris has grown and evolved over the years—much like Pieter himself! Joining us on this adventure were my close friend Johnathan Roberts, one of the owners of Shoshone, along with his wife Meredith and their two children. While Meredith was not a hunter initially, like many non-hunting spouses who come along, it wasn’t long before she had a rifle in her hands! Johnathan’s son, David, who is about the same age as my son Asher, is an experienced hunter, and he wasted no time in taking down several species of plains game. Also joining us were Jason and Trinity Cunard with their two children. Much like Meredith, Trinity started the trip as anon-hunter but by the end, she had harvested a stunning eland and one of the largest nyala I had ever seen! Jason’s kids also had the opportunity to harvest plains game, making this an adventure they will never forget.

Why You Should Take Your Family on Safari

Taking your family on a South African safari is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have. Here are some key considerations when planning a family safari:

South Africa is Safe and Family-Friendly

One of the biggest concerns for families traveling to Africa is safety. South Africa is an incredibly safe destination, particularly when visiting reputable outfitters like Cruiser Safaris. The accommodations are comfortable, the staff is welcoming, and everything is well-organized, making it an ideal location for a family safari.

Lifelong Friendships and Family Bonding

One of the highlights of our trip was watching the kids interact with one another. Whether they were playing pool together, running through the sand, or eating meals side by side, it was clear they were making lifelong friends. Even something as simple as jumping into a freezing cold pool turned into a moment of pure joy. Meanwhile, our wives spent time around the fire, sipping wine, laughing, and even helping prepare a traditional family dinner by the river.

The Excitement of First-Time Hunts

One of the most powerful moments of the trip was seeing the expressions on Meredith and Trinity’s faces as they walked up to the magnificent animals they had just harvested—both taking their first big game animals ever. Their excitement and pride were unforgettable, and it was incredible to watch them embrace the adventure of the hunt.

Cruiser Safaris: A True Family Destination

Cruiser Safaris is more than just a hunting outfitter; it isa place where families feel at home. The accommodations are comfortable, and itis only a short drive from town, meaning the ladies had the option to enjoy a spa day while the men were out hunting. The entire experience was designed to make everyone, hunters and non-hunters alike, feel welcome.

Traveling with Kids: Manageable and Worth It

Yes, the long plane ride to Africa is something no one can change, but the kids did just fine! The key is to wait until they are old enough to remember the experience. My children, Asher and Taylor, had an incredible time. Between them, they harvested impala, blue wildebeest, warthog, blesbuck, and gemsbok—until my credit card couldn’t take any more charges!

Incredible Food and Hospitality

The food on this trip was nothing short of spectacular. Noone lost any weight, that’s for sure! Every meal featured a variety of delicious game meats we had harvested, along with traditional South African dishes. The chef was so fantastic that everyone wanted to take him home with them.

Final Thoughts

Taking my family on safari was one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life. Watching my kids immerse themselves in the adventure, seeing my wife bond with the other non-hunting spouses, and sharing this special trip with close friends made it unforgettable. Whether it was the thrill of the hunt, the breathtaking landscapes, or simply sitting around afire enjoying great food and company, this trip reinforced why Africa is such a special place.

If you’ve ever thought about taking your family on safari, don’t hesitate. The memories you create will last a lifetime, and you’ll begiving your children an experience they will cherish forever. South Africa is waiting for you—so start planning your adventure today!
